Biography
Karla often writes about the protean nature of identity, the matrix of science, technology, and personal destiny, and comedies on topics like existentialist frogs. She's been produced in LA, Atlanta, and OOB.Recognition includes the 2011 YES Festival of New Plays award and 2010 John Gassner New Play Competition SUNY Stony Brook Award; 2009 Pillars Playwriting Prize; Stage Left's 2009 LeapFest; two Sloan commissions, the 2006 Goethe Institut Hermann Kesten Fellowship; the National Arts Club 2005 Playwrights First Award and Lark Theatre Playwrights' Week 2005, and Essential Theatre's 2000 New Play award.
She was founding AMD for Atlanta’s Working Title Playwrights and is proud to belong to WTP, The Dramatists Guild, and The Playwrights’ Center. A former newspaper staff reporter, she’s freelanced for The New York Times, Newsweek, Cosmopolitan, and elsewhere. She wrote a book on computer folklore, The Devouring Fungus. Her husband Kurt Wiesenfeld and twins Sophie and Alexis are totally awesomely fantastic. She thanks Susan Lyles & Co. for courageously taking on a political (!) comedy.
